Research: exercise is not only beneficial to body and mind, but also relieves dry eye

Life lies in sports. Some doctors in China have long recognized the importance of sports.

Among them, Hua Tuo said that "running water does not rot, and the cardinal does not bark", which is to emphasize this point, so he invented the five fowl opera; Sun Simiao, the king of medicine, believes that exercise can "eliminate all diseases, tonify and prolong life, make your eyes light and healthy, and stop fatigue".

Not only that, the World Health Organization has long hailed sports as "the best disease resistance drug". Even, studies have shown that exercise can prevent more than 35 kinds of chronic diseases

I don't know whether exercise can prevent more than 35 kinds of chronic diseases, but I know that exercise can alleviate dry eye.

Recently, the research team of the University of Waterloo found that after aerobic exercise, tear secretion and tear film stability will increase significantly, which may be another treatment to alleviate dry and itchy eyes.

As usual, let's talk about dry eye first.

Do you feel that every time you blink, your eyes will feel moist? This is because our eyes are covered with tear film every time we blink, which is the basic protective layer necessary to maintain eye health function.

A healthy tear film consists of three layers of tissue - oil, water and mucin. They will work together to moisturize the eye surface and prevent dust or dirt and other irritants that cause infection from hurting the eyes.

However, they will also be "tired". Once one of them is lazy, the tear film will become unstable, and then there will be dry spots on the eye surface, causing symptoms of eye discomfort, such as itching or tingling and burning, which is dry eye disease.

Before the "rampant" of electronic devices such as mobile phones and computers, our dry eye symptoms were not obvious until everyone became a bowhead and could not wait 23 hours in 24 hours to lie in front of the screen, and dry eye disease became more and more common.

In order to improve this situation, researchers want to determine whether maintaining physical activity can be an effective measure to prevent dry eye without using eye drops or other alternative therapies.

In the study, 52 participants were divided into two groups, athletes and non athletes, to participate in physical exercise. Participants in the athlete group exercised at least five times a week, while participants in the non athlete group exercised no more than once a week. Researchers performed visual examinations before and five minutes after each exercise to assess tear secretion and tear rupture time.

Although the participants in the athlete group showed the greatest increase, the researchers said that all participants had significantly improved tear volume and tear film stability after exercise. The results show that physical exercise is important not only for people's overall health, but also for eye health.
