I like to see thousands of waves of rice, and it's time for a bumper harvest. At the autumnal equinox on September 23, China's fifth "Chinese Farmers' Harvest Festival" came as scheduled. This day is a festival for hundreds of millions of farmers to celebrate and enjoy the harvest. From the expectation of sowing to the joy of returning grains to the warehouse, autumn rewards people for their hard work.
However, everyone should pay attention to that this God given reward sometimes needs to pay a price.
In this "extraordinary" season, there are two "invisible killers" that do great harm to the eyes. One is the ultraviolet ray in sunlight. Being exposed to ultraviolet light for a long time is likely to cause "cataracts". Seeing things is like seeing flowers in a fog. In serious cases, you can see nothing; Second, foreign bodies such as grains, husks, and grass scraps can cause eye injuries and fungal keratitis if they are not careful during harvesting, threshing, and wind exposure.
What is fungal keratitis?
Fungal keratitis is an infectious keratitis caused by fungi, which is common in agricultural workers and has a high rate of blindness. After the 1970s, its incidence rate increased significantly. How high is it? Let's look at several sets of data:
Some scholars selected 572 patients (572 eyes) who were clinically diagnosed as fungal keratitis in the Ophthalmology Hospital affiliated to Wenzhou Medical University from January 2016 to December 2020 to analyze the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with traumatic fungal keratitis in southern Zhejiang.
The results showed that 332 (59.1%) middle-aged and elderly male farmers were the main patients, and plant trauma was the main pathogenic factor, while Fusarium was the main pathogenic bacteria. Fusarium is widespread in crops and soil. In autumn harvest season, male farmers have more opportunities to contact crops and soil (September to November is the peak period for patients with fungal keratitis, 248 cases in total, accounting for 44.1% of the year), which leads to an increase in the probability of such people suffering from fungal keratitis in this season.
To analyze the infection characteristics and clinical treatment outcome of patients with fungal keratitis in Jingzhou area, and provide basis for clinical diagnosis and treatment of fungal keratitis in this area. Some scholars collected the data of 176 patients with fungal keratitis diagnosed by etiology from the ophthalmology department of Jingzhou Central Hospital from January 2015 to July 2020, and analyzed the epidemiological characteristics, fungal strain identification results, drug sensitivity, clinical treatment process and outcomes of the patients.
The results showed that most of the people with fungal keratitis in Jingzhou were middle-aged and elderly men, and most of them were caused by corneal trauma during agricultural labor. Most of them were Fusarium and Aspergillus. It was very important to select reasonable antifungal drugs and treatment methods according to the drug sensitivity results.
To investigate the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of fungal keratitis. Some scholars reviewed 508 cases (508 eyes) of fungal keratitis in the ophthalmology department of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University Medical College from 2001 to 2011, including the risk factors, etiology diagnosis, diagnosis and treatment.
The results showed that among 508 cases of fungal keratitis, 437 were farmers, accounting for 86%. 50% had a history of corneal trauma, including 147 cases of plant scratch (29%).
Based on the above data, combined with the analysis of the causes of fungal keratitis in other papers, it is indicated that the main population of fungal keratitis is farmers, and the main cause of fungal keratitis is the history of crop contact or trauma.
Therefore, everyone must strengthen self-protection when doing farm work. Wearing a pair of goggles is the simplest and direct protective measure. The goggles, which cost dozens of yuan, can prevent most dangers for you.
Moreover, goggles may be used in daily life even if they do not do farm work.
During the epidemic, goggles can prevent droplets from flying into the eyes; When riding, goggles can prevent dust, scrap iron, gravel and other small sharp objects from splashing; At ordinary times, goggles also block the damage of ultraviolet rays and strong light to eyes during welding.
Finally, if your eyes are accidentally scratched by crops, and there are pain, tears, redness, itching, vision loss or photophobia, you should go to a doctor in time to avoid irreversible vision damage caused by deterioration of the disease.
