"After I got over my fever, my left eye was worn and I was afraid of light."

"I tested anti Yuanyang for 2 days and saw things a little fuzzy"

……

Recently, patients with eye discomfort after COVID-19 infection appeared in the ophthalmic clinic of Beijing Geriatric Hospital. Zhao Huiying, deputy chief ophthalmologist of the Elderly Hospital, reminded that if there is eye discomfort after infection with COVID-19, cold compress can be used to relieve eye pain and other discomfort. If the discomfort persists, you should go to the hospital in time.

Zhao Huiying introduced that after infection with COVID-19, redness, eye pain, and vision loss are common eye discomfort.

Zhao Huiying said that conjunctivitis is the most common ocular manifestation after COVID-19 infection. The main symptoms of patients are redness, foreign body sensation, tears and other discomfort, which can occur in one eye or both eyes, and can occur in all stages of COVID-19 infection. "At present, it is believed that the occurrence of conjunctivitis may be related to the direct invasion of conjunctival tissue by COVID-19 or the attack of the immune system on conjunctival tissue after COVID-19 infection. Hand eye contact may increase the occurrence of conjunctivitis."

Superficial scleritis can also be seen in patients with COVID-19 infection, manifested as local redness, eye pain, tears and other discomfort. Zhao Huiying said that most superficial scleritis is self limited. Previous studies have shown that about 1/3 of patients with superficial scleritis may be related to virus infection. Uveitis and keratitis can also cause eye redness in patients with COVID-19 infection.

In addition, because COVID-19 activates inflammatory factors leading to trigeminal nerve dysfunction, positive infection may also cause eye pain.

Central retinal vein occlusion is one of many vascular diseases caused by COVID-19 infection. Patients may have blurred vision, distorted vision, etc. Central retinal artery occlusion can also occur in patients with COVID-19 infection. The main manifestation is sudden painless visual loss.

In addition, people infected with COVID-19 can also suffer from acute macular neuroretinopathy due to retinal capillary ischemia, which is characterized by painless vision loss or occlusion of vision in one or both eyes.

What should we do if eye manifestations appear after "yang"?

Zhao Huiying reminded that first of all, we should actively treat the primary disease, such as eye pain associated with high fever, and we need to use antipyretic drugs according to the doctor's advice. Cold compress can be used to relieve eye pain and other discomfort. In case of vision loss, timely go to a medical institution with ophthalmology department to avoid delay in treatment. Patients with persistent discomfort such as eye redness and eye pain should also go to medical institutions. Hand eye contact may increase the incidence of conjunctivitis, so try to avoid rubbing eyes with hands to avoid eye infection.
